Air New Zealand's inaugural flight between Auckland and Ho Chi Minh City has touched down, opening the first direct air link between New Zealand and Vietnam.

Flight NZ269 arrived into Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport at about 1am Sunday (NZ time) with Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce on board.

He's there to promote business opportunities, particularly in the tertiary education sector where he also has ministerial oversight.

The addition of Ho Chi Minh City takes the airline's total number of international destinations to 30.

The service will operate on a seasonal basis three times per week from now through until the end of October, using Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
