An Air New Zealand flight was cancelled after a passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant while the flight was boarding.

Air NZ says the incident happened as customers were boarding flight NZ648 to Auckland in Queenstown on Friday.

Police were called and the airline is not commenting further.

The flight, which was due to leave at 6pm, was cancelled, according to Queenstown Airport.

A police spokesman said the 75-year-old passenger was charged with common assault, but was let off with a pre-charge warning.
