Air New Zealand has pipped the likes of Taylor Swift and Adele to claim number one on the Kiwi iTunes chart with its Christmas song Summer Wonderland.

The promotional song features multi-platinum artist Ronan Keating and teenage Kiwi actor Julian Dennison and has been watched more than 10 million times online since December 1.

Keating and Dennison use the song to provide a humorous take on well known Christmas tune Walking in a Winter Wonderland as they swap the lyrics around to better reflect what Kiwis do at Christmas time.

Air New Zealand's general manager global brand Jodi Williams said she was thrilled by how successful the song had become after it was released to raise funds for the Starship Foundation, which helps child hospital patients.

"Our ambition was to release a Christmas song that told the world about the special moments that make a southern hemisphere Christmas - a season of sunshine, barbecues and beaches rather than snowmen and sleighs," she said.

"It's fantastic to think the song's homegrown lyrics are bringing a smile to millions worldwide and helping to make Christmas a bit brighter for families spending their holidays in Starship."
