Customs officers have made a $3.2 million cocaine seizure at Auckland airport.

A Brazilian woman will now spend her 29th birthday in prison on Tuesday after being accused of attempting to smuggle the 4.6kg haul into the country, Customs says.

She arrived on a morning flight from Brazil via Chile on April 2, where she was questioned and searched by Customs officers before X-rays showed inconsistencies in her bags.

When the bags were drilled traces of cocaine were found leading officers to eventually extract 4.6kg, Customs said.

Customs investigations manager Bruce Berry said his teams used intelligence information to have "a really good idea" about which arriving passengers they should take a closer look at.

"Customs work is led by intelligence and we do extensive screening to identify those that may pose a risk," he said.

The woman is due to appear in the Manukau District Court on April 7.
