New Zealand golfers Steve Alker and Danny Lee are on course for mid-field finishes at the first tournament of the US PGA Tour season.

The pair drifted off the pace in the third round of the Safeway Open in Napa, California, with Alker 51st on four-under and Lee a shot behind him.

Both players snuck under the cut mark by two shots at the rain-affected tournament but neither found their best on day three, with Alker one stroke better via his even-par 72.

Americans dominate the top of the leaderboard, with Johnson Wagner on 14-under holding a one stroke lead over Patton Kizzire and Scott Piercy.

That trio were among a handful of golfers whose third round was cut short by rain.
