Alker qualifies for Open Championship

New Zealand golfer Steven Alker will make a fourth appearance at the Open Championship after qualifying through a tournament in England.

Alker finished needed a top-three finish in a two-round tournament at Royal Cinque Ports golf club in Kent, where he finished runner-up on three-under in a field of 72 golfers.

The 44-year-old shot rounds of 68 and 71, to be three strokes behind winner Matthew Southgate and level with another Englishman, James Heath.

The Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland will host the Open Championship from July 14.

Alker has missed the cut in two of his three appearances, in 1998 and 2007. He finished 19th in 2012.

His two other major appearances were at the US Open. He was 45th in 2013 and missed the cut a year later.

Alker is playing this year on the second-tier Tour in the United States.
