All Blacks Sevens bounce back

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

The All Blacks Sevens have recovered from an early shock defeat at the Singapore Sevens to win both their remaining pool matches and set up a quarter-final clash against South Africa.

France starved the New Zealanders of possession and exposed their defensive frailties with a stunning first-up 24-0 win on Saturday.

There were no easy games for the All Blacks Sevens, who then had to withstand a second-half revival from Canada for a 24-17 win in their second pool match.

Regan Ware scored a brace, with Dylan Collier and Gillies Kaka also chipping as the Kiwis raced away to a 24-0 halftime lead before Canada stormed back with three second-half tries to Sean White.

The All Blacks Sevens again started strongly in their final pool match against the United States, tries to Ware, Collier and Kurt Baker giving them a 19-0 halftime lead.

The Americans also mounted a second-half comeback, but ran out of time and the Kiwis held on for a 19-12 win.

South Africa have advanced to the quarter-finals unbeaten, with comfortable wins over Scotland, Russia and Kenya.

New Zealand went into the Singapore tournament, the eighth in the 10-leg world series, second on the points table behind Fiji, to whom they had lost in the Hong Kong final.
