The 21-year-old, who plays his football for PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands top flight, was ruled out on the eve of the team's arrival due to a significant haematoma.

He suffered the injury during an Eredivisie match against AFC Ajax last week in which he scored the only goal in a 5-1 loss.

All Whites coach Anthony Hudson says it is bad luck for Thomas, who missed much of last season after undergoing knee surgery.

The five-cap international missed the Nations Cup in May and June.

"It's a shame for Ryan as I know he was desperate to play on this tour and get back into the All Whites environment," Hudson said.

Thomas is replaced by Wellington Phoenix midfielder Louis Fenton in the 23-man squad.

Fenton's inclusion means five Phoenix players will miss the club's opening A-League match against Melbourne City on Saturday.

The All Whites play Mexico in Nashville on Saturday followed three days later by a friendly against USA in Washington DC.
