All Whites plummet to record-low ranking

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 7/04/2016

The All Whites have slumped to an all-time low in FIFA's world rankings, surpassed among others by a volcanic archipelago whose national team is still in its formative years.

A lack of matches has resulted in New Zealand spiralling 12 places to 161st in the latest monthly rankings, surpassing their previous low ranking of 159th late last year.

The All Whites have played just eight internationals since losing a World Cup play-off to Mexico in 2013. Only one of those games was won, 1-0 away to Oman in their most recent outing last November.

The sovereign island nation of Comoros, situated off the African east coast, has snuck one place ahead of the All Whites courtesy of a recent win over Botswana.

Its national team was given full status by FIFA a decade ago and hosted their first official international game in 2007.

Other archipelagos with populations of less than 500,000 to leapfrog the All Whites in the last month include the Maldives, Curacao and Sao Tome e Principe.
