The Western Front will be the focus of New Zealand's international commemorations of the First World War this year.

The New Zealand Defence Force says there will be Anzac Day-related ceremonies in France and Belgium and centenary commemorations of the battles of Messines and Passchendaele.

An NZDF contingent is participating in the annual Anzac Day services in France and Belgium during the World War I centenary period of 2014-2018.

There will be ceremonies this year at Longueval on April 22 and Le Quesnoy the following day in France, and in various locations in Belgium on Anzac Day on April 25.

Later in the year, New Zealand will mark two centenary commemorations in Belgium at sites on the former Western Front - the Battle of Messines on June 7 and the Battle of Passchendaele on October 12.

New Zealand made its most significant contribution to the war on the Western Front, where it also suffered the greatest loss of life.

Anzac Day will also be commemorated in Gallipoli with the traditional Dawn Service at the Anzac Commemorative Site and the New Zealand Service at Chunuk Bair later in the morning.
