App leads electric cars to charge stations

Drivers of electric cars can now use an app to find one of more than 500 charging stations across New Zealand.

Hydro and solar electric provider Mercury announced on Thursday it had teamed up with software creator PlugShare to develop the app.

Mercury chief executive Fraser Whineray said there had been a rapid uptake in electric vehicles in New Zealand as well as investment in public charging infrastructure.

But he said some people were still not buying electric cars because they were worried they could not travel far enough in-between charges to reach charging stations.

"We know from our experience as EV drivers that you only want to know one thing. Where is a charger if you need one?" he said.

"We are ... (simplifying) the search for drivers (to) give them the confidence and choice about where they can fill up on home-grown renewable energy."

Mercury has plans to double the number of charging stations listed in the app, called Electric Highway, to more than 1000 within the next 12 months.
