Police are calling for witnesses to a fatal South Auckland crash in which a car went through a shop, setting both on fire.

Emergency services pulled a person's body from the wreckage on Portage Rd in Papatoetoe on Sunday morning but have yet to formally identify the victim.

The car, a red Ford Falcon, went through a shop front at about 4.20am and hit a gas main, sparking a blaze in both the car and buildings.

It took some time before the scene was considered safe enough to recover the driver's body.

Police say it is still too early to speculate on what may have caused the crash and have called for witnesses to come forward.
