Archibald eyes Olympic berth

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 24/06/2016

Sprint cyclist Matt Archibald has continued his push for inclusion in New Zealand's track team to the Rio Olympics with a solid effort at the International Track Series grand prix in Melbourne.

He finished seventh overall in the individual sprint after qualifying fourth in 10.11sec, and worked his way through two rounds before falling to Japan's Tomoyuhi Kawabatu in the quarter-finals.

Archibald also placed seventh in the keirin, winning his heat and repechage, but missed out on the final after placing fourth in his semi.

The meeting attracted the full Australian sprint contingent, who were using it as part of their build-up for Rio.

After a second meeting in the series over the weekend, Archibald heads to Europe to press his claims for an Olympic berth.
