NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/06/2016

New Zealand cyclist Matt Archibald has displayed solid form as he heads to Europe in a final push for selection for the Rio Olympics.

Archibald finished third in the individual sprint at the Melbourne UCI meet this weekend, the second of two events as part of the International Track Series.

Archibald, bronze medallist in the time trial at last year's world championships, qualified second fastest in 10.187s for the 200m behind top Australian Matthew Glaetzer.

He went on to beat Malaysia's Muhammad Rasol in the first round and Tomoyuki Kawabata of Japan in the second, but lost to second-ranked Australian Patrick Constable in a tight semi-final.

Archibald recovered well to beat China's Bi Wenjun in the bronze medal ride-off.
