Labour's Jacinda Ardern and the Green Party's Julie Anne Genter are appearing at an Auckland event on Saturday as the Mt Albert by-election gets closer.

Both candidates will appear at the annual Splore Festival, a boutique music and arts festival, about midday on Saturday.

They're both past festival attendees and only a week before the vote they've agreed to be part of the festival's Saturday talk programme, The Listening Lounge, organisers say.

The pair will be interviewed jointly on stage by moderator Russell Brown, about cooperating and competing in election year and about their respective parties' policy offerings.

The festival is at Tapapakanga Regional Park.

The by-election was called after Labour MP David Shearer resigned to lead United Nations peace keeping missions in South Sudan.

National is not running a candidate in the February 25 vote.
