Three masked men armed with weapons that included a pistol, a golf club and another blunt object have robbed a Waikato dairy before making off in a stolen vehicle, police say.

The incident happened at the Waingaro Road Dairy in Ngaruawahia about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Detective Russell Crawford says the sole male shopkeeper retreated to the rear of the building to keep himself and his family safe.

He says the offenders stole a large amount of tobacco and cigarettes, before leaving in a blue/green 1997 Nissan Sentra Hatchback.

The car, which had been taken from a Ngaruawahia address earlier in the day, was dumped outside an early childhood centre in Brownlee Avenue, about 600 to 700 metres away from the dairy.

Det Crawford says hundreds of people, including those who use the Hakarimata Summit Track steps to keep fit, frequent the area daily.

He says police want to speak to anyone who might have information relating to the robbery.

The offenders are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s, have skinny to medium builds, and be about 1.75m to 1.80m tall.

They were wearing dark coloured long shorts, lighter coloured hoodies and masks covering their faces.
