Six people briefly held hostage by a gunman in the French capital have been freed uninjured, authorities say.

An armed robbery on Friday at a Paris travel agency has ended without casualties.

Six people had been held hostage by a lone gunman but were able to leave the building uninjured under police protection, local mayor Jerome Coumet said at the scene.

The gunman fled the scene, the mayor said. There was no initial suspicion that the man was motivated by terrorism.

"The people were scared that the robber would stay on the premises. That wasn't the case," Coumet said. This was confirmed by French police.

The TV channel BFMTV said that an armed man came into the Asian travel agency shortly before close of business and asked for the location of the safe.

The agency in the south of Paris had previously been targeted in a robbery, the channel said.
