An armed man, dressed in a shark onesie, let his sweet tooth get the better of him when he robbed a Canterbury service station for chocolate and lollies.

A BP attendant in Rolleston didn't expect to be the victim of prey just after 2am on Monday, when two armed men, one dressed in the shark get-up, entered and held him up at knife and hammer point.

Police said the pair smashed a glass shelf as the staff members retreated to a back room.

The shark and the second man, dressed in a black hoodie, stubbies, baseball cap and sunglasses, then left with "an unknown amount of confectionery".

Both offenders are of average height and build, and were wearing blue bandanas on their faces, police said.
