A motorcycle business has been ramraided and a police car rammed during a crime spree which ended with a man's arrest in the Northland town of Dargaville.

Five shops in the town were burgled on Thursday morning, police say.

A vehicle was stolen from one shop and used to ramraid two of the shops before he was disturbed by police and a car chase started.

"During this pursuit the offender has rammed a police unit causing significant damage to the vehicle."

No one was injured.

The offender later stole another vehicle, which he abandoned before police officers caught up with him on foot on a local farm.

Police are investigating the scenes in Dargaville and haven't yet said what charges the man will face.

Dargaville Honda owner Ivan Henderson said it appeared just the safe and chainsaws had been taken.

"There's a good truck-sized hole in the building," he told RNZ.
