A man has been arrested following a police hunt for an armed fugitive in the Waikato.

Police say the 27-year-old Te Puke man was taken into custody in Rotorua at 11pm on Wednesday without incident.

He is set to appear in Rotorua District Court on Thursday facing 23 charges, including the aggravated robbery of the Paengaroa Liquor Store this month, using a firearm against a police officer, arson, burglary and theft.

Armed police, dog units and a helicopter were deployed in the search for the man on Wednesday, scouring large areas of bush in South Waikato, after he was identified at a Tokoroa petrol station in the morning.

Police said he had driven off in a stolen vehicle without paying for gas.
