Police have made an arrest after a Dunedin man was sexually assaulted by a man dressed as a woman.

The man was attacked while walking home from the Octagon at 5.30am on June 26 after a late night out following the All Blacks Wales rugby Test in the city.

The attacker was dressed as a woman, and was carrying a jacket and a handbag, but was believed to be a male of medium-to-athletic build, with long dark hair, police said at the time.

On Thursday police said a 30-year-old had been arrested and charged with sexual violation and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

He is set to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday morning.
