Police arrested the man they were hunting over a shooting in south Auckland.

The 36-year-old has been charged with attempted murder after he was picked up in Rodney, north of the city on Sunday morning.

He will appear in Manukau District Court on Monday.

Police had been looking for Head Hunters gang prospect Billy Matara after Hemi Hingaia was shot - reportedly in the stomach - in Yates Rd, Mangere, early on Saturday morning.

Mr Hingaia, 35, remains in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital, says Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin McNaughton.

He hoped the arrest would be of some comfort to the alleged victim's family and the wider Mangere community, he said in a statement.
