A man bundled into the back of a police car has climbed into the driver's seat and sped off following a stop on a Hamilton street.

Video footage posted to Facebook shows the officer, who has just lost his ride, commandeering the man's car to chase his vehicle on Monday.

Police say the patrol car was later found a short time later.

In a statement, Hamilton city area commander, Inspector Greg Nicholls, says the police car was unlawfully taken when the officer stopped the vehicle on Clarkin Road.

"The driver was subsequently arrested and placed in the rear of the patrol car," he said.

"Whilst police were outside the vehicle the arrested man has climbed through from the back seat and driven off."

Police said they knew who the driver was and were trying to track him down.

No further details were available.
