Three people have been arrested after Ruapehu District mayor Don Cameron and his wife were allegedly assaulted in Raetihi.

Police say a 19-year-old male has been charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A 25-year-old female has been charged with aggravated assault and burglary, while a 21-year-old woman faces a count of aggravated assault.

Police say a man and a woman were assaulted when they interrupted the group, who had been trying to steal property.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Cameron said he and his wife, Phyl, were leaving the town's theatre on Tuesday night when the incident happened.

Mr Cameron said he and his wife were set upon and received cuts and bruises, and they were left shaken.

He said he was hoping to return to work on Thursday and he didn't want the attack to reflect badly on the town.
