Asbestos under a Dunedin sports field

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 2/12/2016

Part of a sports field in Dunedin has been fenced off after a contractor digging it found what is likely to be asbestos.

Contractor Downer was excavating a raised mound at the southern end of the Logan Park sport field on Friday when the asbestos-like material was discovered, Dunedin City Council says.

Work stopped immediately and a specialist has confirmed it's likely the material is asbestos.

Samples have been sent to a lab for testing.

The site has been fenced off with 1.8m of temporary fencing and signs have been put up.

Most of the area has been covered with clean fill to avoid any potential exposure and WorkSafe NZ has been advised.

The material appears to have been buried for some time.

All the material will be removed from the site, the council says.
