AT A GLANCE: NEW REPORT SHEDS LIGHT ON FISHING CATCH

* A new study has reconstructed NZ's fishing catch between 1950 and 2010

* It estimates the total amount of fish caught during that period to be just over 38 million tonnes - 2.7 times more than what was officially reported to the United Nations

* Since the quota management system was introduced in 1986, the total catch is conservatively estimated to be just over two times what was officially reported

* Unreported commercial catch and discards account for the vast majority of the discrepancy

* Recreational and customary catch accounted for 0.51 million tonnes - 1.3 per cent of the total catch

* Researchers are calling for a review of the quota management system
