At-risk student funding announced

Education Minister Hekia Parata has revealed details of funding aimed at getting resources to students from welfare-dependent families.

The $12.3 million targeted operational grant funding package was announced on Wednesday - with schools also being informed of what they are getting without the at-risk students being identified.

Some schools will receive a few hundred dollars while one will get $109,000, reflecting the challenges its students face, Ms Parata says.

The money was being targeted at students from families on long term welfare, as evidence showed they were one of the biggest groups at risk of not being successful at school, she said.

"We have identified around 133,000 students in this situation, attending all but 15 of our smallest schools.

"That means that 99.4 per cent of eligible schools will be getting extra funding."

Ms Parata said that under blanket distribution the country's 761,000 students would get $16 each but the new model allocated $92 for each eligible student.
