Athletic Bilbao have climbed above Basque rivals Eibar on the Spanish league ladder after a 3-1 win at home.

Athletic Bilbao have beaten Basque neighbours Eibar 3-1 to climb above them on Spain's Primera Division ladder.

Ernesto Valverde's team took the lead at 41 minutes on Sunday (Monday AEDT), with Benat Etxebarria scoring a spectacular long-range free kick into the top corner of Aitor Riesgo's net.

Inaki Williams made it 2-0 on 54 minutes with a goal just as eye-catching as the opener.

The Athletic forward galloped clear of the Eibar defence with a run that started on the half-way line to score only his second goal of the season.

Sergi Enrich nodded Eibar back into the game on 70 minutes after the impressive Takashi Inui headed across the face of goal, but Iker Muniain sealed the victory with a late third.

The home win for Athletic ended a run of three straight victories for Eibar.

It also continued their coach Jose Luis Mendilibar's miserable run of having lost all eight games he's contested in San Mames.

"Running fast is one of my qualities and I am happy to have used that to get the goal," Williams said.

In the earlier game on Sunday, Betis drew 3-3 with Celta Vigo.

Iago Aspas scored twice but with goals from Ruben Castro, Antonio Sanabria and German Pezzella the home side look destined for victory until Facundo Roncaglia levelled with six minutes left.

Also on Sunday, Alaves entertain Las Palmas, Osasuna visit Sporting Gijon, and Valencia host Malaga.
