Athletics New Zealand chief executive Linda Hamersley has announced her resignation after three years in the position.

Hamersley is returning to Australia to join her husband, former Black Sticks coach Colin Batch, who recently took over as the Australian men's hockey coach.

She said the decision had been a hard one to make, particularly with the sport looking so strong ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"Athletics is enjoying such a positive profile and engagement, and it's difficult to walk away from that."

Athletics NZ chairwoman Annette Purvis said the sport had been revitalised under Hamersley's leadership.

"She has overseen considerable improvements within the organisation, and the board acknowledges the hard work and success Linda has achieved."

Hamersley will leave her role in September, allowing plenty of time in the hunt for a replacement, Purvis said.
