Atletico Madrid have been given a fright in the second leg of their Copa del Rey clash against Las Palmas before scraping through on a 4-3 aggregate.

Atletico Madrid became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 4-3 aggregate win over Las Palmas on Tuesday in Spain.

Diego Simeone's team lead 2-0 from the first leg and took the lead on the night through Antoine Griezmann in the 49th minute.

Marko Livaja equalised in the 57th minute but Angel Correa restored Atletico Madrid's advantage with a goal in the 61st minute.

It seemed Atletico would cruise through after Correa's goal but they were in for a late scare.

Livaja scored again with a minute left and in injury time Mateo Garcia put Las Palmas 3-2 up on the night.

One more goal would have sent the underdogs through but Madrid held out for the win.

Correa admitted: "We made it difficult for ourselves but we got the result in the end."

Las Palmas' defender David Garcia said: "We scored three goals against the team with one of the best defensive records so we can be happy with that and now focus on the league."

The remaining seven last-16 Copa del Rey games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday. Barcelona are 2-1 down against Athletic Bilbao but have home advantage in Wednesday's second leg.

On Thursday Sevilla are at home to Real Madrid but are still expected to go out of the competition after losing the first leg 3-0.
