Green MP Denise Roche has won the public's vote for quote of the year after saying sex could never be good or sinful enough to warrant God sending an earthquake as divine retribution.

Her quip came in response to Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki's much-panned November comments that homosexuality and "the weight of human sin" caused the Kaikoura earthquake.

Second spot in Massey University's 2016 Quote of the Year, announced on Friday, went to press secretary Rachel MacGregor for calling her former boss and Conservative Party leader Colin Craig a "douche bag" in the High Court.

Massey speech writing lecturer Dr Heather Kavan said she suspected most people voted for the quotes that made them smile.

"Denise Roche's statement was quick-witted and funny. She conveyed her point without denigrating Tamaki, in a situation that left others struggling for words," she said.

"MacGregor's quote appeals because it's raw and authentic, uttered with her back to the wall as she defended herself in the High Court."

"In two short sentences, she tells a story of disillusionment that people can relate to in different contexts."
