Auckland International Airport's operations are returning to normal, a spokesman says, after travellers were evacuated from the departure hall of its international terminal when smoke alarms went off.

The incident was being investigated and he couldn't say if the cause was linked to a similar incident less than a week ago when planes were grounded and people evacuated from the international terminal at about 7.30pm last Monday. The Fire Service said it was a false alarm.

More than 70 per cent of visitors enter or leave New Zealand via Auckland Airport, which handles more than 15 million passengers a year. More than 20 international airlines serve Auckland Airport, Australasia's third-busiest international airport.
