Auckland apartments cladding same as fire

Two Auckland apartment buildings have cladding similar to that in London's Grenfell Tower block, which experienced a devastating fire last week.

An Auckland Council spokeswoman said the two buildings are currently being reclad for weather-tightness issues, rather than fire safety concerns.

The buildings are clad with aluminium composite panels - a building material used on the Grenfell Tower block.

Ninety more high-rise buildings are being investigated also.

"There has been interest about the safety of Auckland's buildings, and the council's role in securing that safety," she said.

"We would not allow buildings to remain unsafe or at risk to the public."

Auckland Council said it's reviewing around 90 buildings in the wake of the London fire. The death toll stands at 79.
