The man has been identified as 36-year-old Socksay Chansy.

His body was found in the Orakei Reserve in Okahu Bay on Saturday.

He had recently returned to New Zealand after a long period living overseas, says Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Newman.

"Mr Chansy was estranged from his family and we believe he had been living and sleeping rough in the central Auckland area in the days or weeks following his last confirmed sighting on April 25."

After talking to other homeless people in the area they are now appealing for sightings of him since that date and have released a photo of Mr Chansy.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out but further tests are needed to find out exactly how he died.

The death is being treated as unexplained.
