Two valuable paintings by iconic artist Gottfried Lindauer have been stolen in an Auckland ram-raid.

Police say the burglars drove a vehicle into the International Art Centre in Parnell at about 4am on Saturday before getting away with the two works painted in 1884.

The paintings are Lindauer's depiction of Chieftainess Ngatai-Raure and another of Chief Ngatai-Raure.

"As yet, we do not have an estimated value for these paintings," police said.

The vehicle used has been recovered and police are appealing for public information.
