Auckland celebrates with regatta

Boats of all shapes and sizes will be out on Waitemata Harbour for Auckland's Anniversary Day celebration.

The founding of the province of Auckland has been marked with a regatta since 1840 and this year is no different.

Organiser promise a "glorious spectacle" with vessels on the water including, tall ships, gaff riggers, sloops, racing keelers, multi-hulls, sailing dinghies, radio controlled boats, waka ama, sea scout craft, classic yachts, an armada of more than 20 vintage tugboats and America's Cup prototypes.

The tug boat races will start off Princes Wharf at 10am.

Spectators are expected to fill the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter area where onshore events are planned.
