Joao Moreira has come off the bench to bag a hat-trick as Auckland City began the defence of their Oceania Champions League crown with a 4-0 win over the Solomon Warriors.

City, champions for the past five seasons and seven times in total, took their time to break down the Warriors in Auckland on Sunday.

They finally got on the board in the 54th minute when Daewook Kim headed home a Emiliano Tade corner.

Tade then made way for Moreira, who made it 2-0 at QBE Stadium by turning in Takuya Iwata's cutback from the byline.

Moreira got his second by finishing when one-on-one with keeper Anthony Talo.

The Portuguese completed his hat-trick in stoppage time after lead-up good work by fellow substitute Nicolai Berry.

On Sunday, Team Wellington, who beat Auckland City in the domestic ASB Premiership final at the same ground a month ago, also made a winning start to their campaign.

They defeated Suva 2-0, with Ben Harris heading in both goals in the last 16 minutes.
