An investigation is under way by Auckland District Health Board after a mentally ill teenage girl was removed from an Auckland motorway by police.

The incident on Friday evening on a bridge on Grafton Road brought rush hour traffic in central Auckland to a standstill.

Police managed to get the 16-year-old to safety and she was being seen by medical professionals for assessment.

An ADHB spokeswoman said a serious incident review into the event would be undertaken and it would be provided to the Ministry of Health's director of mental health.

The teenager was released from hospital on Friday, the NZ Herald reports, citing unnamed family members.
