A post mortem has confirmed the death of a man whose body was found in a central Auckland shop doorway on Thursday morning was not suspicious.

The body of Jonathan Tera Ngere, 34, was discovered in the doorway of Dunkin Donuts in Queens Street.

"As a result of the examination and enquiries made by officers since early (Thursday) police are no longer treating Mr Ngere's death as suspicious and it will be referred to the coroner," a police spokeswoman said on Friday.

Police had been investigating whether a fight between several people shortly before Mr Ngere's body was found was linked to his death.

Homeless people in the area said Mr Ngere was one of them and suddenly fell backards, awkwardly hitting his head, the New Zealand Herald reported.
