Auckland Rugby have been fined a total of $4000 for fielding an ineligible player in the women's Northern Regional Sevens.

NZ Rugby dished out a penalty of $3000, plus $1000 costs, after one of Auckland's players was found to have represented another country.

The player wasn't named by NZ Rugby but of those called up by Auckland for the tournament, only Akari Kato has played for another country, Japan.

Failing to secure approval for this player was unacceptable, NZ Rugby said.

Auckland will still be permitted to compete at next month's national sevens tournament in Rotorua.
