Auckland gets new $12m Parnell station

A new train station has opened in the Auckland suburb of Parnell.

The Cheshire Street station, opened on Monday morning, currently provides access just to Parnell, but will later link the Auckland Domain, the University of Auckland and AUT.

It's cost $12 million so far, but Auckland Transport chairman Dr Lester Levy says it will become a vital link for students and local residents.

""We are well aware of the needs of the area and we took the attitude that it was vital to get even limited services stopping here as soon as possible."

When the station is complete, an expected 2000 passengers a day will use the university stops.

At the moment it's equiped with platforms, shelters, ticket and AT HOP card readers and an underpass to link the platforms, but later this year will be getting electronic gates, CCTV and mobility parking.

The former heritage building Newmarket Station will be refurbished by KiwiRail.
