Auckland Harbour Bridge could close

The Auckland Harbour Bridge could be closed for the first time in its history if Cyclone Cook brings winds strong enough to make it too dangerous to cross.

The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to plan ahead for the possible closure on Thursday.

Closing the 58-year-old span would be "unprecedented" but the predicted winds of between 130km/h and 160km/h could force their hand, says Auckland highway manager Brett Gliddon.

"Closing the bridge is not a decision we will take lightly because it will have a significant impact on traffic flows throughout the city, but our first priority is safety and that's what will determine any closure," he said.

Alternative routes between the city and the North Shore will be State Highways 16 and 18.

"We encourage people to think ahead and start planning alternative ways to get home or to their destinations later today, and to consider delaying any non-essential travel across the bridge," Mr Gliddon said.

The transport agency will monitor wind levels and keep the public informed throughout Thursday.
