Nearly a week after a 69-year-old man was the victim of a hit-and-run, Auckland police have issued an appeal for witnesses.

The man was badly hurt after being hit by a silver stationwagon as he stood by his own car on Te Atatu Road on Wednesday afternoon last week.

The stationwagon stopped briefly a few metres past Brennan Road before likely driving off toward the Te Atatu shops, says Detective Senior Sergeant Roger Small.

"It may be that the driver has not realised that they have hit someone but we need to speak with them to clear this up.

"It would be appalling to think that someone would hit a pedestrian and then not come back to check if they were okay," Det Snr Sgt Small said.

Police are searching the wider area for CCTV footage and want anyone who has CCTV cameras at their home or business to get in touch.

The 69-year-old remains in hospital in a stable but serious condition.
