The home side reached an imposing 198-5 at Eden Park Outer Oval, boosted by Chapman's knock, which featured seven sixes, and a rapid 55 from wicketkeeper-opener Glenn Phillips.

Otago were restricted to 176-7 in response, with former Auckland batsman Anaru Kitchen (42) and Derek de Boorder (44) their most effective pair.

Northern Districts beat Wellington by seven runs in a low-scoring affair in Hamilton.

The hosts were dismissed for 142 but were able to keep Wellington to 135-9. Daryl Mitchell (4-35) shone with the ball for Northern Districts, removing the top three batsmen cheaply.

Central Districts made it three out of three for the home team batting first, beating Canterbury by seven runs in New Plymouth.

The rain-hit match was decided via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Central Districts posted 198-6 and Canterbury responded with 77-3 off 8.5 overs before the weather closed in.
