Captain Rob Nicol's half-century set the tone as Auckland beat Northern Districts by 38 runs to snatch back top spot in the domestic Twenty20 championship.

Auckland are three from three after defending 186-6 at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

Fourth-placed Northern Districts could only manage 148-6 in response to notch a second loss.

Opener Nicol put some stuttering form behind him with 55 from 47 balls while the most destructive innings of the match was 36 off 12 from Black Caps allrounder Colin de Grandhomme.

Ish Sodhi's 2-26 off four overs was the best bowling return for the home side but that was trumped by another legspinner, when Auckland's Tarun Nethula claimed 2-20.

Northern Districts were bogged down by tight bowling from Nethula and speedster Tymal Mills (1-19) before a fruitless late flurry from Daryl Mitchell (37 not out off 22).
