Auckland University staff have scheduled to strike action on March 16 in an effort to achieve fair pay, an education union says.

The Tertiary Education Union said negotiations with university management have been going on for over seven months.

A 1.2 per cent pay increase in 2017 followed by a flat rate pay rise of $1200 from February 1, 2018 was proposed in an effort to avoid strike action, as well as a $3500 increase for those being paid the least.

This proposal was rejected by the university in favour of a 1.2 per cent increase in pay for two consecutive years, followed by discussions.

"We don't take the decision to go on strike lightly--our preference is to conduct our research and to teach. However, academic and professional staff all make vital contributions towards maintaining the University of Auckland as one of the best places in New Zealand to study," TEU academic co-president, John Egan, said.

It's not too late for senior management to negotiate further to prevent the strike, he added.
