Affordable homes in the Manawatu-Whanganui region are catching the eye of those priced out of the Auckland housing market.

According to realestate.co.nz figures the region experienced a 50 per cent jump in the number of those searching properties on its website in October compared to the same month last year.

Most of those searching were locals but a third more Aucklanders were looking for homes in the region, with it most popular among those aged 25-44.

"It makes sense that Aucklanders would be looking at other regions and not only exploring investment options, but also weighing up the lifestyle benefits of a move outside of the big city," said the website's chief executive Brendon Skipper.

The average asking price for a house in Manawatu-Whanganui is $288,267, compared with Auckland which rose to a new high of $943,258 in October.

Mr Skipper said Aucklanders were outnumbering locals in searching properties in Taranaki, which was recently ranked the second-best region to visit by Lonely Planet, and average prices in the region are now at a record $384,401.
