Consent decisions on two major Auckland roading projects will be made by the end of the year by special boards of inquiry, Environment Minister Nick Smith has announced.

The process is much quicker than the usual resource consent process.

The projects are the $1.5 billion east-west link which involves a four-lane highway between SH20 and SH1, and the $700 million northern corridor which will complete the city's western ring route.

"The decisions on these huge transport projects are critical to Auckland's future," Dr Smith said.

"The board of inquiry process does ensure a timely decision but is not a guarantee as to the outcome - I strongly encourage Aucklanders to engage in the process."
