Aussies thump NZ in first netball Test

NZN 9/10/2016 Adrian Warren

Another stellar shooting effort from Caitln Bassett helped Australia to a convincing 68-56 win over New Zealand in the first game of the four-Test Constellation Cup series in Sydney on Sunday.

Following up her international carer best effort of 53 goals in Australia's last game against the Silver Ferns, Bassett nailed all 47 of her attempts on Sunday before being replaced at three-quarter time.

New Zealand scored the first goal, but it was their only lead of a match played in front of 15,161 spectators at Qudos Bank Arena.

The Diamonds piled on the next nine goals to take control and capitalised after pressuring the visitors into some early turnovers.

Australia won each of the first two quarters 16-11 to lead 32-22 at halftime, though at one stage early in the second quarter the gap was down to two.

The Diamonds outscored the Silver Ferns 22-16 in the third to lead 54- 38 at the final change.

New Zealand salvaged some pride in the final quarter, winning it 18-14.

Bailey Mes topscored for New Zealand with 28 but committed eight turnovers under pressure from the irrepressible Sharni Layton.

The four-match series continues in Launceston on Wednesday.
