Australia's men have boosted their Sydney rugby sevens quarter-finals hopes with a dominant pool match victory over Scotland.

The hosts, needing to bounce back from a loss to New Zealand in their campaign opener, were never troubled in the 43-14 victory on Saturday, jumping to an early lead through a hat-trick to Tim Anstee.

Anstee was unstoppable on the left flank at Allianz Stadium, scooting over wide in the opening minute before adding his second soon after.

He completed the treble with more than three minutes in the first half remaining, helping Australia to a 19-0 advantage.

Scotland recorded their first score with a James Fleming try a minute from the break.

But any thought of a comeback was short-lived, as Australian captain Sam Myers scored tries either side of the break to extend the lead.

The visitors reduced the deficit with a second try, but late tries to Australia's Mick Adams and Liam McNamara were enough for a 29-point victory.

Earlier, the home side was overpowered by New Zealand, who won 26-14.

Australia face minnows Papua New Guinea in their final of three pool matches on Saturday before the finals on Sunday.
